Tonight we decided to go full Danish and bbq dinner in the park near our place. You can buy disposable grills at the local grocery stores for a few dollars and we brought some steaks, rice, and veggie kabobs from home. The kids played while I cooked and it turned out to be a great evening.
Lots of people doing the same thing tonight but it’s a huge park and as you can see, we had plenty of space to stretch out. On the other side of the park there’s a large gazebo where they were salsa dancing. We rode past to check it out then wound our way through the nearby forest to discover a clearing where they were having a swing dance party as well. It’s crazy how much stuff is happening here in the summer. I heard that Europeans really pack it in during the warmer months, but you have to see it to believe it.
We stopped for some ice cream on the way home to wrap up a really nice evening.
I meant to post pictures of these last week but couldn’t find the time. The kids drew me some sweet father’s day cards. Above is the inside of Emma’s. Here’s Evan’s portrait of me…
And here’s the front of Emma’s. That’s me surfing…
I’m so proud of both of them. This move hasn’t been easy and their well being was our biggest concern. There have definitely been some hard days, but for the most part they are handling the change well and wake up happy and ready to explore their new surroundings every day.
Last Friday was Emma’s last day of Kindergarten and she passed near the top of her class. She can read so well and is writing better every day. She can even do math! She has impressed us both with how well she did this year even with all of the sick days, moving to the other side of the world, and having her new best friend move away.
Evan starts in his new børnehaven (kindergarten) in august and I can’t wait for him to make some friends. He’s been cooped up all winter with his crazy sister and it will be great to socialize with some new kids.
During the winter, they constructed a new beach (‘strand’ in Danish) just north of us and last weekend was the grand opening. With the weather approaching 30 degrees today, we decided to head over and check it out. Looks like everyone else had the same idea.
We managed to find a couple of meters of open sand to stake our claim and broke out the beach gear. The kids dug for treasure while Leigh and I soaked up some much needed sunshine. We are turning into real beach junkies lately. Luckily, there are quite a few in Copenhagen and the surrounding area. The water is still pretty cold, but it didn’t stop them from jumping in for a while.
So glad summer is finally here. This next week looks to be the hottest yet, too!
